Make an American U21 Player Contest:

Alright everyone, the NT staff and I have decided to hold a contest to encourage training of our young Americans. The idea is this: Train an American rookie, if he makes the Season 21 U21 team, you win. We will be giving away several prizes including supporter, custom banners, showcasing your player in U21 or NT scrimmages, and more.

Because it usually takes 3 seasons of dedicated training, and we wanted everyone to have a fresh start, the goal is for the Season 21 U21 team. You will need a great 18 yr old rookie on your team at the start of next season! That means you will either need to draft a great American player, or buy one at the start of next season. To help you do this we will provide you with several guides and resources.

Now we know that Season 21 is a long time from now. To keep you motivated and give you an opportunity to brag about your trainee, we will be posting rankings, updates and giving away prizes along the way. If you have a top 5 19 yr old in Season 19, or a top 5 20 yr old in Season 20 you will win a prize.

If the contest is a success, we will consider extending it for the Season 22 U21 team!

What does it take to make the U21 team? How should I spend my draft points? Please check out all of our guides to find out!

What does it take to make the U21 team? Here are some basic guidelines:

Guards:

Age: To train a U21 player, you will need to begin with an 18yr old player.

Potential: For American guards to be considered for the USA U21, obviously they must have a certain level of potential to even have the capability of reaching the skills necessary.

- For U21 guard prospects, at least 6 (allstar) potential would be necessary, but likely it would have to be 7 or higher.

Training: You will need at least a level 4 trainer.

The basic U21 guard would have their skills somewhere in these ranges at the beginning of their age 21 season:

Jump Shot: sensational-marvelous (12-15) Jump Range: proficient-marvelous (9-15)
Outside Defense: sensational-prodigious (12-16) Handling: prominent-tremendous (10-13)
Driving: prominent-tremendous (10-13) Passing: proficient-marvelous (9-15)

Bigs:

- For U21 big prospects, at least 7 (perennial allstar) potential would be necessary, but likely it would have to be 8 or higher.

The basic U21 big would have their primary skills somewhere in these ranges at the beginning of their age 21 season:

Inside Shot: tremendous-prodigious (13-16) Inside Defense: tremendous-prodigious (13-16)
Rebounding: tremendous-prodigious (13-16) Shot Blocking: Do not train, let it pop with ID training.

Again, every big will not be the same. In some cases we are looking for bigs who are highly specialized in 2 of the 3 primary skills such as ID/RB or IS/ID.

Draft Strategy Summary by Sleet (28628):

- Only invest and participate in the draft if you have a high pick (except in bot leagues)
- Spend $5k or $10k a week on scouting throughout the season
- ALWAYS choose the scouting combine, and do it first!
- Rank all players based on age + height (18 year olds, and correct heights at the top)
- Choose Group Demo if there are at least 10 scouting points worth of 1-2 ball prospects you like, otherwise scout individually
- Adjust player board based on potential/starting skills (with more emphasis on potential)

Thinking of making a more specialized U21 type player, like a SF or a PF for example? Here are some more specific guidelines of what our U21 coach may be looking for:

Base Player: 6/6/6/6/6/6 - 3/3/3/3 - 3/3 - 48 points
SG: 15/13/15/9/9/7 - 3/3/3/3 - 3/3 - 80 points
PG: 12/9/15/10/10/12 - 3/3/3/3 - 3/3 - 80 points
Combo: 14/10/15/10/10/9 - 3/3/3/3 - 3/3 - 80 points
SF: 12/7/12/8/8/8 - 9/8/5/3 - 3/3 - 80 points

Base Player: 4/4/4/4/4/4 - 6/6/6/6 - 3/3 - 48 points
LI SF: 8/5/12/4/4/5 - 13/11/12/6 - 3/3 - 80 points
PF: 10/6/4/4/4/5 - 14/14/12/7 - 3/3 - 80 points
RNG PF: 10/6/4/4/4/8 - 12/13/12/7 - 3/3 - 80 points
Center: 4/4/4/4/4/4 - 15/15/15/11 - 3/3 - 80 points

What else will it take to make an American U21 player?

It takes a combination of things to make the U21 roster. We don't just take the top salaried 21 yr olds. Your player needs to be consistently in good game shape. We look at secondary skills. We look at the needs of the team. The best way to know where your player stands and how you can steer your player in the right direction, follow the discussion on the offsite forum: (http://s3.zetaboards.com/BuzzerBeater_USA_NT/index/)

Need to buy an American trainee because your draft position is lousy? Start saving $ now, and keep an eye on the transfer ads section on the offsite forum when next season starts.

How should I train?

Single position training is crucial if you want to win this contest. Here is a taste of Coco's (23075) single position training guide:

I think if you manage to give training to three players every week 1-position training is not only better for the single player, but also comparably good for your entire team.
Ok: how do we make three players play 48 minutes at PG?
So we have P1, P2 and P3.

Game 1
make sure that:
1) P1 is set as Starter, Backup and Reserve at PG.
2) you play Strictly Follow Depth Chart
3) you are dressing only 9 players.
4) every other non-starting player is in the depth chart as a sub for some position other than PG
5) do not play Full Court Press
6) If the game does not matter too much to you, avoid fast offenses (R&G, LI, PtB): they are, in my view the most effective, but they decrease the chance of your players' getting 48 minutes (lots of possessions = more fouls = more chance your player will foul out).

Game 2
Same as above with P2 in place of P1.
In addition, make sure that between first game and second game, P3 gets a few minutes (say 15-20) as a Shooting Guard.
The reason this is important is that if P3 fouls out in the third game you can still use his minutes as a SG and switch to *two* position training.

Game 3
This is your scrimmage.
Follow the same instructions of first game.
In this game however play Patient or Princeton.
Set "let them play" in the fouls setting.
