So I thought I'd run a little study looking at tactic use since the GDP has been introduced into league play. Of course this is just 2 weeks in, so there is a lot more data that needs to be collected, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

This is based off of the offensive tactics used by 4 D.III leagues (III. 16, III. 1, III. 11, and III. 3). 128 games.

Look Inside: 36 times (28.1%)
Base Offense: 24 times (18.8%)
Motion: 15 times (11.7%)
RunGun: 14 times (10.9%)
Low Post: 13 times (10.1%)
PushBall: 11 times (8.6%)
Patient: 10 times (7.8%)
Princeton: 3 times (2.4%)
In/Out Iso: 2 times (1.6%)

To me this looks a lot more balanced than the past seasons, but what are your opinions. LI is still the most used offensive tactic, but many other tactics are also being utilized.

Nice job EBW.

I am withholding my vote for now on the subject because I think it is far to early to tell. It does appear that more tactics are being used but I'm sure a fair portion of that is due to people looking to experiment with different tactics in case they need to run them if/when the GDP is proven to have a sizable effect on outcomes.

I am surprised that the next most predominant tactic is base. Seems the majority of people are looking to test that different pace and orientation just as we discussed offsite. I'll be interested to see what this distribution looks like a few weeks from now.

Do you plan to add to this and keep a running total of tactics used in these leagues since the GDP in the future? I'm sure it's a lot of work but would be great to see.

I was surprised that BO was so high too. I will probably update the tactic use again after the 5th-6th game for all of the leagues and see how it has changed/stayed the same and then again at the midpoint of the season (if i remember). I'm not sure how much this may vary among higher leagues, but I feel like D.III is generally where powerhouse teams start to form and the most committed members of BB begin to affiliate there, so I thought it would be a nice sample.

I wonder if the GDP will remain optional indefinitely.

It seems that one potential scenario that could unfold is that teams only exercise it when facing bots or a handful of predictable teams, but then decline to use it against opponents who mix it up. Because there is no penalty for not using it, and a wrong guess can be costlier a risk than people might want to take in a game they can't afford to lose.

If I have a tough game against a team that could use any pace, it's like flipping a coin. (A three-sided coin, I suppose, but still.)

So if people start mixing it up enough to make the guess not worth making, then it defeats the whole purpose and it won't get used in competitive matchups.

I think that is the whole point though. The focus of this new feature was to add adversity to the game and force people to play more tactics, even if the GDP is rarely used in the future it has still made a positive effect on the game because not every team can play LI every single game.

I can buy that.

I know I have been persuaded to diversify further. I'll be using the PL to try many tactics/lineups this year, I suspect.

I personally will be using at least 3 different offensive tactics throughout the course of this season, if not more. Managing to trick my opponent into the wrong GDP has already allowed me to hold within a few points of a team that should have destroyed me. Anything to get a slight edge, since I know I'll be fighting to avoid relegation this season.

In many leagues, especially as you go up in division, there tends to be more parity, or at least more teams who are close in ability. The GDP can be the difference in more games in that case.

But you're right that we don't really have a good estimate of the strength of the effect. That's gonna take more time, and will be messy for a bit, but that's the fun of the game IMO.
