Pilipinas NT Report:
Panthers stun Taiwan, 106-95

Dingdong Fornoles scored 39 points to lead the Pilipinas Panthers win against Taiwan, 106-95.

This was a pleasant surprise for the Filipinos, who outhustled the Taiwanese (+10 in rebounds, +4 in steals) throughout the match. “I came in and did my part. What’s important is we win all of our games so we can finish this round with no loss”, Fornoles said after the game.

With the victory against Taiwan, all that’s left now for the Panthers is to win against Malaysia. “I really think we can do it, but I wouldn’t want to be complacent. We still have to face South Korea and Thailand”, Coach Lord Woody said in a text message. “That being said, I am happy with what we’ve accomplished. We have a shot in sweeping this round, and hopefully face Indonesia in the cross-over semifinals.”

When asked to comment about Indonesia’s run, Coach Lord Woody said “Well, we won against them last time, so look forward to meeting them in the next round.”

NT Press Release:
Pilipinas trounces Korea, 111-70

Gabriel Hosillos led six players in double-figures, as Team Pilipinas made quick work of Korea, 111-70.

The Panthers pounced on a hapless Korean squad in the first half, 59-25. GM-Perpete, the Korean coach, must have forgotten to plug the controller in the first half. The match was closely fought during the second half, with Team Pilipinas outscoring Korea, 52-45.

“I am happy with how we played against Korea, but I am more focused on our matchup against Malaysia. That, to me, is our objective.” Coach Lord Woody said during the post-game news conference. He is right – a win against Malaysia gives the Panthers a huge chance in sweeping this round.

The Panthers are set to take two days off for some rest and recreation at the Loreland Farm Resort in Antipolo.

NT Press Release
Panthers beat Malaysia, 73-48

In what was supposed to be a close match, the Pilipinas Panthers instead made quick work of the Malaysians, limiting them to 20% field goal shooting.

Prudence Oton had another career game, leading the Panthers with 28 points. His total point output was more than Malaysia’s total score by the end of the first half.

Malaysia’s poor shooting is as atrocious as the Minneapolis Lakers, who finished the game with 20% field goal shooting against the Fort Wayne Pistons in November 17, 1951. Rumor has it that Malaysia’s star guard, Raymond Asmara, channeled the spirits of Kenyon Martin and Tim Hardaway, finishing the game with a forgettable 2 points in 36 minutes. He shot 1 of 24 from the field.

With the win, the Panthers now have an almost clear path to sweep this round. All that’s left is for the Philippines to win against Thailand.

NT Press Release:
Pilipinas beats Ghana, 127-73

The Pilipinas Panthers begin their campaign in the Season 54 Repechage with a 127-73 thumping of Ghana.

Bigman Royce Cardino must have watched a DeAndre Ayton mixtape before the game, leading the Panthers with an impressive 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks in 30 minutes of action. “We are preparing for a close match against Chile, so this win is important to us,” Cardino said during the press conference. “Chile won against Italy, but it appears their players were too exhausted after the game. I think we will have our chance on Monday,” Coach Lord Woody said during the post-game interview.

Eight of the ten Pilipinas players fielded scored in double figures, and the expectation is the same balanced attack will lead to another Pilipinas victory against the La Roja on Monday.

NT Update:
Panthers lose to Chile, 112-99.

Close, but not quite. That was the storyline in Monday night’s game against Chile.

Team Pilipinas kept the game close in the first 40 minutes, only to lose steam in the end. Bigman Jose Perales led the Chilean charge with a monster 30 points - 12 rebounds performance.

It did not help that the Filipinos lost the services of mainstays James Mabaquiao and Dingdong Fornoles. “I do not want to dwell in the what ifs. We lost the services of key players, and we also thought Chile would rely on their shooters. We will move on, and hope to win against Italians in our next match”, coach Lord Woody said in a press conference. Star guard Dingdong Fornoles will watch the game against Italy from the sidelines.
