Been a while since the cup got representation in the forums... no I totally didn't make this thread just because my team actually has a chance!

Bot bashing phase of the Battlers is now over. Commiserations to the 27 who drew another human in round 3 and lost. I suspect that WA will go for the double again, since they just won it and haven't made any subtractions to their roster since. But a lot can go wrong over the course of a cup run.

Not a lot else to comment on regarding the cup, until a couple more rounds are played and we see who is still left...

I'm betting on the dark horse Hard Ball Gets to win something this season ;)

Was nice to play a non-bot for once. Sorry for injuring your players and thanks for not beating me by 100.

Only thing it really hurt was the training minutes that week, and if your players didn't manage that my idiot coach would have.

Round of 32 now. 9 ABBL teams, 20 Division II, 3 Division III. More importantly though, WA and HBG are both still in and have easy matchups to make the 16. The window of opportunity to pull off an upset may be closing.

Disappointing end to the tournament for me. I was hoping that if I had to lose it would at least be to WA or HBG. Final four is;

High School Drop-outs vs WA IS A DUMP
Koopasaurus vs Hard Ball Gets

Koopasaurus brought in reinforcements just before the cup deadline, so they're definitely a tougher opponent than their league record suggests. The other matchup favours WA, but is far from a certainty.

It's WA vs HBG in the final after all. Probably the two best teams in the nation right now, which is a match-up we don't actually see often in the cup final for reasons previously mentioned, and the relative lack of cup upsets and 'doom draws' this season was itself a surprise.

This will be a rematch of the season 36 cup final, and history is on MP5's side as Hard Ball Gets won that game by 9. And after seeing off the Koopasaurus threat, it would not surprise me if history repeats itself this coming Thursday.

If a mod is around to just change the thread title to 'Battlers Tournament' I'm okay with recycling this thread for this and future seasons of the tournament too, otherwise I'll just make a new thread with that title and use that from now on.

Unlike last season, no bots slipped through the cracks in round 3 (two did last time). I count 4 Division II causalities out of the 21 human teams that didn't make it to the round of 128. No ABBL vs ABBL match-ups yet, so definitely a chance for all 16 to still be in by round 5. As a side note, I do wonder if the cup in this game would benefit from being split up into multiple tiers? For Australia this would mean an ABBL-DivII tier and a separate DivIII tier...

Fair point actually. Wouldn't be fair on DivII teams to not get the same chance to make cash in the early rounds that the DivIII teams would. My initial thought process was that BB's game engine does not make a giant killing run in the cup possible, so for lower division teams the cup stops mattering after the first few rounds. But the effect on the economy would have to be considered too.

I actually don't mind that idea (though I also like my free 50k for the first few weeks of each season). The only issue might be these days there are a lot of bot sides even in Div 3. In fact, I'd hesitate to say there are more sides in Div 2 or above in Australia right now than there are active ones below (being that it takes 80 sides to make up the ABBL and 4 Div 2 comps and we only have, typically, between 145 and 155 active teams at the moment).
But it probably would help newer players to the game make a better start. That said, I actually found it easier to make cash working through those lower grades where you could be competitive based purely off trainees in their early years, whereas I'm finding making the leap from 2 to ABBL hard.

Darn it...I know there is at least one ABBL vs ABBL match-ups next round. Was hoping to get at least one more freebie but alas not to be.
