The playoffs are here! Here is a quick overview of the first round matchups in the EBBL and division II.
EBBL
The reigning EBBL champions Tide of Fire face cup runner up Arsenal 98 on their first step for back to back EBBL titles. Arsenal 98 did win their most recent matchup 88-75 but Tide of Fire have the home court advantage this time round.
In the 2nd vs 3rd seed game on the blue side, LIDLTallfellas face NT U21 coach js8’s Optic Fibres. The Tallfellas did beat Optic Fibres in their previous game but it took an overtime effort to do so. This game could go either way.
Over on the red side, Hope Springs face Leeds City Ballers in the 1v4 tie. Leeds’ top scorer Abu Shaqra has been out through injury but has been able to recover for the playoffs. Hope Springs did the double during the season and look to make it 3/3 wins against Leeds.
The 2v3 matchup between London Whales and BC Zalgiris is a very interesting game as London hold home court advantage but BC Zalgiris are carrying the highest team salary in the league and are seen as favourites by some. Can Zalgiris overcome London’s home court to advance? The Whales will be looking to NT players Barral and MacLaverty to perform well.
The EBBL relegation battles this season look very tasty as all 6 teams finished with between 10 and 8 wins during the season, suggesting every series is going to be close.
The 9-13 Cambois Donkeys face 8-14 Bournemouth Drunkers in the first 5v7 matchup. The Donkeys did win the in-season matchup between the two teams, but did lose their last 4 league games and will need to end their losing streak if they want to survive.
The other 5v7 matchup sees the 10-12 Durham Wasps, who fell 12 points short of making the playoffs, face the 8-14 Bethnal Green Erks. Bethnal started the season 0-8 and managed to turn it around after a 7 point win over the Wasps. Bethnal did have home court advantage in that game which they don’t in this series. Can the Wasps pick up the 2 wins they need?
The final relegation tie sees two teams that finished with a 9-13 record, Stinkilemons and Bromley-By-Bow. Stinkilemons have home court advantage in the series due to their better points difference which could prove crucial for them. They will be hoping the fire power of wings Magdaleno Banuelos and Dallis Brona can be enough to keep them in the EBBL. Stinkilemons won the last matchup comfortably, but the pressure of relegation may make a difference this time round.
