Current u21 team selection is underway. We have a few weeks to put together our team for the World Cup. We are currently ranked 5th in the world, and I'll be aiming to keep us in the top 10 for as long as possible.

Scrimmage vs Japan tonight. Will be setting a lineup to test a few players.

At 5pm (AWT) we take on the might of Serbia in a scrimmage, ranked 3rd in the world coming into the world cup.

Interesting to see how we stack up against them, we have some players in less than ideal game shape, but we are a balanced side. Our world rank has dropped from 5th down to 9th. I suspect that is because nations in the 2nd chance cup are winning games and gaining points that lead to world rank.

(baloon) Season 29 team announcement (baloon)
Australia u21 management are proud to announce the s29 team, representing us at this season's World Cup!

Guards

First up, the captain.

Bob Grief (32053221) (BB)
aka: Good Grief
Nba resemblance: John Stockton
Nbl resemblance: Cal Bruton

Lightning quick, you probably wont even know he is there, he is in and out like a dog at the fair!

Grief comes in to the team for his second, this time as a leadership role. He is a prodigy of his mentor, TP, and we hope to see similar outputs. The kid can play!

Gianfilippo D'Angelantonio (32053829) (BB)
aka: Flipper
NBA Resemblance: Chris Paul
NBL Resemblance: Damian Martin

Flipper possesses a very unique skillset, not often seen by any players, let alone u21s. His defense will be a massive benchmark to the rest of the team about the level of intensity the team aims to apply. With his current training plan, I can see Flipper becoming one of the team most valuable team members.

Igor Salter (32053154) (BB)
aka:
NBA resemblance: Deron Williams
NBL resemblance: Derrick Rucker

Salter will gain high popularity from the Australian community as a stat filler. He will score highly, add assists, block shots and play D.

Joe Albert Katem (32053208) (BB)
aka: JAK
NBA resemblance: Chris Paul
NBL resemblance: Adam Gibson

A pass first PG, Katem is big on finding his team mates open. Dont worry, he will knock down a 3 ball if you leave him open, but his strength is his vision to get his team mates the open shot. His lockdown D is also inspirational to the rest of his team, and they draw energy from his stops whenever he is on the court. Put simply, he makes others better on the floor.

Feng Danxiang
(32053964) (BB)
aka: Thunder Dan
NBA resemblance: Dan Majerle
NBL resemblance: John Rillie

Danxiang comes in from a highly regarded specialist training program from the "Sharpshooters". His elevation on his shot is ginormous, making him very difficult to shot block, or even affect his accuracy. Danxiang also has very, very bright coloured shoes. The coach is having word to him.

Forwards

Graham Hartley (32053780) (BB)
aka:
NBA resemblance: Larry Johnson
NBL resemblance: Andrew Vlahov

Hartley is an aggressor. He gets the job done, and is renown for his tough style of play. His thick brow only adds to the tough attributes he possesses. If your playing on this guy, you might want to wear your bike helmet.

Maverick Parkes (32953627) (BB)
aka: Maverick
NBA resemblance: Kevin Durant
NBL resemblance: Mark Worthington

The first of two 20yr olds on the team, Maverick might just turn into the most complete player the u21s has seen for a long time (a big statement given Chris "Christian" Gingut from season 28". Parkes will find a way to score, defend you, and get his team mates involved. He can line up in any position, and will have a mismatch on his opponent at each one of them. Look out world, this guy is around for two seasons.

Bigs

Michael Bridgewater (32053428) (BB)
aka:
NBA resemblance: David Robinson
NBL resemblance: Paul Rogers

Bridgewater, the vice captain of the season 29 team, is the 2nd of two players to have prior experience on the u21s team. Bridgewater is already Aussie community royalty, after starring in the season 28 Asian Cup final, top scoring for the team as a 20yr old, and earning him the grand final MVP award. His credentials are already high, and if expectations are accurate, he will once a gain cause havoc against all that stand near him.

Scott Geyer (32053961) (BB)
aka:
NBA resemblance: Hakeem Olajuwon
NBL resemblance: Dean Uthoff

While Geyer is a scary looking individual on the court, he is a true gentleman off the floor- one of the nicest guys anyone would have the pleasure of meeting. Its always nice to know the guy that just smashed you on the court is a nice guy, isn't it?

Alec Beausoleil (32053053) (BB)
aka: Big Al
NBA resemblance: Al Jefferson
NBL resemblance: Alex Pledger

what does Big Al and your new iphone have in common? Both are made in China. We had to do some real negotiations to get Al bought over for the season, as he is currently tearing the Chinese league apart. Rest assured, he will be here for our first game, and will be on his game.

Konrad Doran (32586536) (BB)
aka: Konrad
NBA resemblance: Alonzo Mourning
NBL resemblance: Mark Bradtke

Konrad has all the potential in the world, but has come to the Aussie team a little unfit. We are currently adjusting his diet and training program to get him where he needs to be. Watch this space, when Konrad hits peak fitness, he is a force to reckoned with. Underestimate him at your peril.

Jikke Santegoeds (32953739) (BB)
aka:
NBA resemblance: Dwight Howard
NBL resemblance: Mike Dunnigan

Jikke is the 2nd 20yr old youngster on the team. His inside presence is incredible, and his 7'3 frame, and 6' wide shoulders cause nightmares to his opponents for weeks. Be nice to him and he wont squash you.

Last night we won our first game of the first phase, taking down Senegal 126-74 (31200). It is hard to dissect the game with only seeing the boxscore, but looks like a convincing win.

MVP VOTES
3 votes: Maverick. 20 pts in 20mins in his first game as a 20 yr old is impressive. 9-14fg including 2 3pters. He was unstoppable.
2 votes: Flipper. 15pts, 8 assists, and a great defensive display keeping his man to 3-12.
1 vote: Bridgewater. 11pts, 16 rebs, 8 offensive helped us control majority of possession.

Job well done.

Next game is a big test vs Latvia. They had a very high quality game vs Italy (31199)

Get those training minutes right team and lets do some damage!

Go Aussies!

I do hope the nba resemblances are right, and that we have a team that includes Durant, olajuwon, robinson, stockton, and two chris pauls.

We've got this world cup in the bag.

Australia defeats Lithuania 84-82 (31202)
Australia has won a thrilling game to take the victory off 6th ranked Lithuania overnight, in New Zealand.

Tactics were a key coming in to the game with Konrad Doran, Australias most top inside prospect, going down with a soft tissue injury. With no suitable replacements available, Australian management made the decision to go into the game with one big short.

"It was a risk, especially if we had an in game injury" management described of the decision. "Certainly not an ideal situation, we would like to have support suited up ready to cover all situation, even mismatches".

The game did not go without its twists, starting with a sub 8 seconds into the game, where flipper entered for his home town player, and close friend, "JAK" Katem. Australia took the lead 44-36 at half time.

The third quarter had a change in the tides, with Lithuania coming out and tearing down the defense that held them so well in the first half, as they poured on 23pts in the 3rd quarter, whilst conceding only 14pts, to take the lead 59-58 at 3 quarter time.

The final quarter saw Australian staff go right to the end of its bench, gaining contributions from each of the 11 suited up players. Lithuania went out to a 5pt lead with 4 minutes to go, thanks to the power of Toliušis and Neverovicius who went on an unstoppable surge of points inside. But Australia turned to its depth, with Hartley providing a great no look pass to Salter for the basket, and in the same minute, Salter returning the favour with an identical play back to Hartley.

"He is such a versitile player" Hartley said, ironically. You cant try to stop one part of his game, like passing, and he will sense your intent and score on you. The next play he will play mind games with you and make a great pass". Hartley himself showed a very similar trait, making a few big plays, and dishing out 3 assists.

The final minute saw a few crucial plays as team desperately tried to grab the lead. Beausoleil came up big with a basket late, providing that energy from the bench, and rewarding the coaching staff's 4 big man roatation selection.

But it was Lithuania that came home strong, drawing the lead back with 12 seconds to go.

"We drew up a play for the big guy, Bridgewater" Grief said. "But as I dribbled in to the 45 (angle) I saw his man jumping all over him. My man was so focused on stopping the feed inside, I got my feet set, and got lucky". Grief described the play well, as with 4 seconds left in the game, he drained a "dagger" 3 ball, taking Australias lead up 2. The game had a final play with Tigrudis getting the ball for a baseline shot to keep the game alive, but it was once again the defense of Good Grief that made the shot difficulty too much for the high scoring Lithuania side.

MVP Votes
3. Bridgewater- 9-12FG, top scoring for the Aussies with a 20pt, 8 rebound game.
2. Good Grief- 12 pts, 5 assists, 2 steals that included the game winning 3. His defense was impeccable.
1. Santegoods- The 20yr old not only put up 13pts, 8 boards and a vital 3, but stopped Lithuanias key player, Culkovas, a man 3 times his salary! Culkovas was a key threat to the teams success, and great defense held him to 11pts on 33% shooting.

Our next match will be no less important, with 4th ranked Serbia. Konrads injury should be better, and we hope to see some pops with only 2 pops from the 12 man squad last week, a sign that there will be a few this week!
