Consolation Tournament - Season 42

Hello mga idol! We will be playing in the consolation tournament this season where home-court advantage are up for grabs for next seasons Asian Championships. As usual we will try our very best to make a good run and developing players for the coming seasons.

I would also like to raise awareness about the status of our NT (or current & future NT players that is) especially for the newbies in the community. We have been through a dip in terms of the quality of the players we are producing for the past seasons. Its harder to compete against the Asian giants nowadays, we don't need to go very far to see the talent gap. Take a look at last season's game against China where our season is on the line, we guessed the GDP perfectly for focus and pace and CT'd vs their TIE and we still lose by a wide margin. Some mid of the pack teams have already caught up with us talent wise like Iran, Malaysia & Indonesia. They improved for sure but I think it is more of us taking a step or two backwards.

On the bright side, I am very much encouraged with the results of the scouting that I did during the off-season. This is not about the the quality of players that are on the pipeline for the coming seasons but more on WHO are training them. I have spoke to some of the vets who are still as always very supportive of the national cause. What is really encouraging is that most of the young players are handled by new coaches (or not as old as I am on this game haha!). I am also encouraged with the hype that is being generated by our new U21 manager which is helping to pull more of the young managers attention to our U21 & NT teams. I am looking forward to a stronger & bigger community which is what we exactly need to take back what is rightfully ours, first in Asia and hopefully in the Worlds. Laban Pilipinas!

Pilipinas NT 12-man Roster for this year's consolation tournament games.

The Pilipinas NT staff announced today the final 12-man roster for this season's National Team games.
Consist mostly of regular names from last season's roster, this year coach Jeorge emphasized the need to press more game experience to the up and coming NT players by having only 3 players over the age of 30 in the final lineup.

"This is not to say that older players will not be selected in the future, it's more about giving our young guys a chance to prove themselves in the international stage which they can use as a springboard to develop into more experienced NT players."
said one member of the coaching staff.

"The list is by no means final, we will be updating and switching rosters depending on the players' performance and game fitness."
added the national team coach.

I've been playing BB since 2010 and pabalik balik ako, this time putting emphasis on defense! I'm used to beb that guy who dosen't care on defense, in short I'm a Mike D'Antoni type of a GM. Now, with my 3rd stint in BB, I hope this team will do good! :)

Pilipinas 87 - Suomi 100

The Pilipinas NT succumbed to defeat at the hands of a determined Suomi team during the ongoing Consolation Tournament held in Finland last Monday.

Things got off to a slow start as Pilipinas could not get a decent look at the basket the entire game. Lucio Tongson took most of the scoring cudgels as Suomi's defence forced him to take unfamiliar looks at the basket. Ace Madrigal paced the Filipinos with 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds but couldn't get enough touches as Suomi's defenses shut down all avenues towards the post.

Even as Pilipinas penetrated the Suomi lanes there were the twin towers Sami Chydenius and Moltas Matsson, alert like border guards, always ready to apprehend any offenders at the rim. Both big men combined for 8 of Suomi's 9 blocks.

For the Pilipinas head coach, it did not go unnoticed.

"Definitely a learning process for the team.
They have like a Gobert on the inside too. Rejecting and changing our shots at the rim."

Suomi endured a blistering rally by Pilipinas during the 4th quarter lead by Lucio Tongson and Emerson Tapia who just started to find their scoring groove. Tapia's tip-in cut the lead to 77-84 with 2:47 left in the game, but it was too little too late as Pilipinas never got closer, the Finns kept their composure and responded with a run of their own to keep the Filipinos at bay--dashing any hopes of a comeback as the final buzzer sounded.

"Still proud of our boys especially with that run that we had towards the 4th qtr which shows the fight that these young guys have in them." added NT head coach Jeorge.

Suomi was lead by point guard Heikki Kausti with a marvelous shooting perfomance. His teammates were constantly looking to get him open and made 10 of 15 shots from the field. His back court tandem Tauno Ihanainen wasn't as efficient (8/23 FG), but was instrumental in dousing the flames during Pilipinas' 4th quarter uprising.

Pilipinas will want to quickly put this one on the back burner as the game against Wales is coming up next week. No games are considered easy at his point. Stay tuned.

Philippines breaks out of scoring slump in impressive fashion, dismantles Wales by 58 points: 146 - 88.

Emerson Tapia, last week's best performer against Finland, stood at the dugout entrance while waiting for the opening ceremony to start, standing at the end of the tunnel next to him was a group of college kids, one had his face painted with the colors of the Philippine flag and the other one holding a banner that reads "Laban Pilipinas! Puso!". The Filipino had an unassuming look on his face but deep inside he knows the team was itching to bounce back after last week's disappointing loss--more so now that they're playing at home, in front of 20,000 expecting, die-hard Filipino fans.

"We're glad to be home, we're always excited and ready to play in front of the home crowd, they're our MVP and we dedicate this game to them. We have a great chance to prove to everyone that there's more to look forward to with the Philippine NT squad this season."

It was evident that Wales tried to spring a surprise as soon as the game went underway, pressing high up the court on defense, this lead to steals which resulted in 9 forced turnovers. The crowd started to become anxious fearing another upset by Wales. But Philippines did not disappoint this time, they kept their composure and came up with their own game plan to break the press that lead to a series of dunks and open layups which electrified the crowd. By the end of the opening quarter, the home team was up by 21 points.

Jesus Oh was unstoppable in all areas of the offense as he scored 25 points on 11 of 12 shooting. He made all of his shots in the paint and also stepped outside to shoot 3/4 from deep. Meanwhile leading scorer Othelo Dacoco made his presence felt mostly from range, catching fire and draining a series of jumpers including 4 of 5 baskets from 3pt land to finish with a game-high 33 points. Emerson Tapia was at his usual consistent self as he recorded another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Owen MacUre top scored for Wales with 20 markers and mostly effective under the basket. But he struggled to convert outside the paint shooting only 2 of 6 from outside the arc. Wales swingman Jason Lawrence had to be helped off the court and replaced by Herman Mahon early in the opening quarter. Mahon scored 15 points on 6/18 FG shooting.

In summary, Wales had more quality looks but failed to take advantage, missing 38 of their 54 open shots. Their starters combined to shoot a lethargic 31% from the field.

Scores:
Philippines
Dacoco 33, Oh 25, Tapia 17, Dorola 14, Inayan 14, Tongson 14, Magalona 12, Madrigal 8, Paler 4, Ignacio 3, Libre 2, Dalida 0

Wales
MacUre 20, Mahon 15, Arthur 15, Oliver 14, Wessman 7, MacNider 6, Smith 4, Devine 3, Parsons 2, Lawrence 2, Edmunds 0, Lawson DNP-CD

Estillore's time to shine!

In related news: Siegfred Estillore's stellar PPL league form convinced NT coaches that he was deserving of a spot in the national pool. Estillore who plays PG for Pilipinas PPL team Laguna Buko Mixers has been a steady hand at the helm for coach Leo and his boys averaging 15.1 PPG and 6.4 APG, the second best assist per game average in the league. He will be called upon to fill the gap in the point guard position and will add much needed pace and ball handling while on the floor. He will be readily available in the NT game against Lebanon next week.
