The fixture is a (very) basic round robin, with only the minimal complexity in order to keep the code for generating it simpler.
Each conference is divided into two 4 team pods, and those pods play against teams from the opposite pod for the first 4 games, with "Pod A" playing at home for one game, then "Pod B" playing at home the next game and so forth.
The next three games are intra-pod games, 1v2 and 3v4, then 1v3 and 2v4, then 1v4 and 2v3. There's no real functional way to prevent all teams from getting two consecutive away games when you're doing an intra-pod schedule like that, and one of those double away games will have to happen in game 2 and 3.
Intraconference play then starts on the following (8th) game, and IC play alternates between all Big 8 teams home one matchday or all Great 8 teams home the next matchday. The Big 8 plays away on MD8 for odd numbered seasons, so this season there will be two Big 8 teams that had their MD6 + MD7 games away and thus get the Dreaded Triple Away.
