I think rebounding is one of the skills that is a little overrated, especially for the salary that it adds to bigs. I think a player with bad rebounding is a lot smaller of a hole than a player with bad OD or lower ID/SB.
I believe that rebounding is largely a team influenced stat, and many times, while all other players are boxing out, the ball will simply fall to a guy with bad rebounding because his team as a whole is better at rebounding.
The truth is that the difference between a guy with 12 REB and a guy with 15 REB only equates to a few more rebounds a game, and many times getting better rebounding at the 1-3 spots makes up for those 2-3 rebounds and saves a lot of salary.
My typical starting SG has atrocious rebounding and still averages 3.9-4.0 rebounds per 48 minutes.
Even more interesting is that my backup C (11 REB) averages 18.1 REB per 48 minutes and my starting C (15 REB) averages only 18.6 REB per 48 minutes. Not a big difference at all. Sure who they are rebounding against will make a difference but my overall point in that there is just a tiny gap of rebounding between players with varying skill level is still shown I think.
