I suggest playoff matchups are made across conferences. So instead of the 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 matchups to come out of the same conference, to have:
Big 1 vs Great 4
Big 2 vs Great 3
Big 3 vs Great 2
Big 4 vs Great 1

Sometimes the competitiveness of teams across the 2 conferences in a division can be very different.
With this proposal, the 2 best teams of the division will clash in the finals, which could be from the same conference.

Sorry, probably not being clear.

Currently 1st round of playoffs is:
1. Great 1 vs Great 4
2. Great 2 vs Great 3
3. Big 1 vs Big 4
4. Big 2 vs Big 3

2nd round / Conf Finals:
Winner 1 vs Winner 2 (Great Finals)
Winner 3 vs Winner 4 (Big Finals)

I'm suggesting that it is changed to:
1. Great 1 vs Big 4
2. Great 2 vs Big 3
3. Great 3 vs Big 2
4. Great 4 vs Big 1

2nd Round / Semis:
1. Winner 1 vs Winner 3
2. Winner 2 vs Winner 4

Similar to how relegation series are matched up.
This way, if Great 1 and Great 2 are the best teams in the Division, they can meet in the finals instead of the semis. If, instead, the top teams of each conference (Great 1, Big 1) are the best teams in the Division, they can also meet in the finals.
And yes, the concept of conference finals would go away, it would just be the semis.

It just ensures that the best teams of the Division are matched up in the finals, not necessarily the best teams of each conference.
