There is an interesting discussion going on in the "Bugs, bugs, bugs" forum about the soft cap, and as I think it can be beneficial to all of us, I would like to continue here.

The interesting stuff starts here: (80944.20)

well for me the soft cap is comforting that i wont see salaries go much higher but discouraging as i fear we will just see a complete flood of players on the market from now on that look very similar (already happening with Centres).

with formulas being discovered, it is surely only a matter of time before somebody figures out the most efficient way to train the perfect player (height/pos/skill set - salary) for a position. might sound a bit crude but if you can build/buy a $150k C and a $100k PF and SF with 2x $75k guards thats $500k of salaries... add 3-5 $20-50k subs and sell out an arena of 30,000 each week with no taxes (oh and if you can get local players in the above looks like a saving is around the corner too!)

with the softcaps on allstars its just slowed us down in our quest to build the perfect franchise...or is it not just a race to get to this stage?

I believe soft caps are not defined on salary but on (weighted sums of?) skills.

I second that.

I don't think you can say the allstar cap is at 50k (as said in that thread), seeing the huge amount of allstar players at a pretty young age who are above 50k. I didn't experience any slowdown yet except the part that my C gets older (23yo already), he's at 63k at the start of the season and still he trains about even as my 32k C who's 1 year younger.

I don't think it is salary per say either. However, the 50k is there to say that all-star players can hit the soft cap as soon as 50k. Empirically, it looks as though it is the sum of is, id, reb and blocking (with perhaps slighter weight for blocking) that leads to the soft cap - somewhere around 47 or so. For shooting guards, looks to be principally a combination of js, jr and od with the soft cap around 39. I imagine there is a more complicated formula, so that each skill that figures into salary is considered.

I think what sfg meant in terms of efficiency was on how to figure out where the soft cap is and train other useful skills (say rebounding, is for a sg) before adding that last level of od to hit the soft cap.

Yeah... you know i have always been a stickler for rounded players... and i am determined not to get Bastias to Sensational in any skill and see how far i can take him. I would ideally want a younger and higher Pot guy to test it but for the time being he will do... popped again today and i hope he still has a few more in him.

But the JS and OD are killer. If either goes too high then you are doomed... Its hard to say cos age/heights are other variables but i think ive learnt without the use of formulas how far you can push skills before you have to stop.... I just hope with the next batch of guys I can be patient enough on their lowest skills before going back to the ones that matter.

So can I get this straight (in your opinion). The soft cap slows the training of all skills once a select few skills add up to the skill cap? So in your example of a SG, the speed of rebounding would slow done once you have like JS,JR and OD at thier limit (say sensational/tremendous for allstar)?

Cheers
