There's no direct path from the consolation tournament to the world champs.
The best ranked continental team in the consolation tournament (i.e. the team that goes the furthest, for the Americas it's often getting to the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs, for Europe it basically means winning the consolation tournament) hosts the next season continental championship.
The winner and finalist of the continental championship go directly to the world champs, the semi finalists and 3rd place teams in the 2nd round group go to the repechage. In the repechage tournament, only the best team in groups of 4 goes to the world championship, the other 3 go to the consolation tournament first phase, but start with a 0-2 record as the other teams in the consolation already played 2 games by that point.
Every other team not listed here (i.e. placed 4th and below in the second round of the continental championship) go directly to the consolation tournament the next season.
Hope that clears things up!
And yes if you're not the best placed continental team in the consolation tournament, you get nothing. The only thing you can gain in the consolation tournament is hosting the next season continental champs, which can be the difference between winning it and finishing third or in the semi finals.
