Bean put the entire franchise on his back, exploding for a magnificent 53 points on 18-of-33 shooting. Power forward Z. Guzman flirted with a triple-double, racking up 24 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Yet, despite these two heroic performances, the Register-Guard walked off the court with a loss because one man single-handedly anchored the team to the bottom of the ocean.
That anchor was starting center I. Estep, who turned in a historically pathetic performance that cost his team the game. Estep was a complete black hole on offense, whimpering his way to a miserable 8 points while shooting an abysmal 4-of-15 (27%) from the floor. He refused to look for his shot, failed to establish any deep position, and routinely killed the team's offensive flow. His total lack of aggression set a defeatist tone for the frontline, completely neutralizing the perimeter brilliance of Bean and Guzman.
The game was truly lost in Estep’s specific matchup against EDH Wolves center N. Uricchio, who absolutely humiliated him from the opening tip. While Estep grabbed a pathetic 6 rebounds in 48 minutes of play, Uricchio dominated the glass with a staggering 22 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards that gave the Wolves endless second-chance points. Uricchio bullied Estep in the paint for 21 points and finished with a game-high 11.0 rating. To make matters worse, Estep spent the night hacking in frustration, ultimately fouling out of the game and leaving his team completely stranded.
The locker room environment was toxic after the final buzzer, and Estep’s teammates did not hold back from throwing him directly under the bus. "You can't win in this league when your center gets out-rebounded by 16 boards by one guy," a visibly frustrated Z. Guzman told reporters. "J. Bean dropped 53 points tonight. Fifty-three! Teammate and Head coach T. Lawson was equally ruthless in the post-game press conference, making it clear that Estep’s spot in the starting lineup is no longer secure. "We got absolutely destroyed on the inside, and that falls squarely on the shoulders of our center position," the coach growled. "When you play 48 minutes, shoot 27%, and let your matchup treat you like a hallway doors on the glass, you are actively hurting the team.
