In a real simple way: If you want to neutralize the one inside shooter of your opponents then the box-and-one tactic might be useful. If you want to bolster your defense in the paint in general, possibly against a whole team of good inside shooters, then go with 2-3.
Of course, when considering all the nuances of your and your opponent's team, game shapes, offensive tactics etc, the best defensive tactic may vary somewhat.
