With Buzzerbeater Madness showing that a swiss style tournament can be coded into this game, I felt it was time to revisit one of my common suggestion topics in the form of redrawing competition formats for the purpose of either making them fairer, fitting them into a shorter season, or both.

In regards to the B3, the solution would be to have a standardized 128 team bracket for the swiss phase. Since we have 62 leagues in the game right now after smaller nations got merged, it would make sense to change qualifying so that the spot from winning the cup gets transferred to the league runner up should one team do the league-cup double.

That means 124 teams (62 league, 62 cup), so the remaining 4 places could then be filled by the B3 and BBM tier 1 winners if not otherwise qualified, then the 2-4 highest ranked teams not otherwise qualified to fill out the 128 . Once this 128 team bracket is set, the B3 itself can adopt the exact same format as BBM right now: 7 round swiss, top 64 advance, neutral court all season.

That sets the cutoff for making the knockout round to 4-3 regardless of PD, much like how the cutoff in BBM is 6-1 with no PD to worry about. Ideally I'd make every competition including leagues and cups in this game effectively neutral court, but making group play in B3 neutral is a start as I have long argued against the nature of 'doom draws' in the competition, and BBM has shown that a solution exists.

Last time I remember the topic of B3 qualification coming up, there was significant pushback against the idea of former B3 champions qualifying for the tournament by default. (308965.1)

One compromise that I think is worth considering if you still like the idea is to only have the 2-4 highest ranked former champions not otherwise qualified get the invite each season. That way you weed out ex-champions who are in a full rebuild and would hence be horribly outclassed in the top global division.

I'm still in favour of transferring the cup winner berth to the league runner up. If a 128 team tournament is going to require at-large berths to be given either way, you may as well give them to conference champions who just fell short in the final, rather than rely on the relative lottery that is world ranking more than you have to.

If they're good enough to compete, they'll make the final 64. If not, somebody had to make up the numbers.

Good idea! I like it!

Maybe to qualify for an at-large birth, you need to be one of the following:
-League runner up
-Cup runner up
-Former B3 champion
-BBM Tier 1 runner up
-B3 runner up (if not already qualified)

What do you mean by "former B3 champion"? Do the usual rules still apply, such as WR < 1000?
