I have encountered some issues relating to auto-bid. How actually is the auto-bid function activated? Since I press the button directly when inputting the amount I wish to auto-bid, the price was immediately raised to my auto-bid price instead of raising bid by bid.

Help would be much appreciated on how to use the auto-bid function

Did you by any chance got outbid by another manager, who also had used the auto-bid option? In this case you basically bid against each other as long as one of the final auto-bids is overbid.
