I don't see how 33 year-old is too old. We're not talking about 100 per cent possibility for a player to retire at such age. A chance of retirement should gradually grow year after year.

In fact, I find SpicyMcHaggis™ suggestion neatly balanced, because it takes into account not only age, but also injury history and role in the team. If implemented, such a system would be much more realistic than current almost-40 years olds having major roles on decent teams. Whether it's possible to implement, that's another question.

And your expectations to keep him longer are not that realistic, if we're talking about the real game of basketball, as the developers also tend to do. I get that this change would have a major impact on the market value of the older players. But maybe, just maybe, it's the way to go?

Don't know much about the BB code, but my hope is there could be a solution, starting from maybe 60 years old, to introduce a steadily increasing chance for a player to die. I think it will have to be done, sooner or later. Maybe the time is now?

Your thoughts?

People die in their 20's too, could make for some fun seasons!

Frankly, I struggle to see the connections between BB and the real game of basketball in so many aspects (training, first and foremost, also injuries, etc) that I would most definitely not start out with something that could allow players to more or less randomly decide to not be available anymore in their mid-30s.

I would suggest to not lose sight of the original intentions of this thread, which was to find a way to not overpopulate BB with 60 and older players.

If we're talking about the real game of basketball some rookies aren't trained out of position for 48 minutes and score 20 points per game right away. If I finish training a hall of famer at age 29-30 I don't want him to retire at 33.

Plus look at the number of NBA stars still at their peak late into their 30s

Most of them are far from their peak, but I get the point. The exact time of introducing a chance of retirement is up for discussion, I think. It could be 35 years (so already after the start of a decline), or even 38. Point is, we probably need some mechanism to make retirement automatic. If some players continue playing until late 40s, with some luck involved, so be it. But the majority should go at some time.

I have a legend of my club at 38 now. He still gets some playing time, and he could be really productive at a lower league. I know he will have to go, but I don't want to fire him. I would much prefer to have an objective random mechanism to declare that the time is up.

I'm sorry but isn't this game already random enough ? Injuries, draft classes quality, game engine randomness, skill downs, etc...
And you want to add a random process so that players retire while they can still perform for many seasons ?

Sorry, what injuries? My 38 old veteran had something like 4-5 minor injuries in his whole career It doesn't even remotely compare with real world's randomness, where lots of talented players do not reach their full potential due to injuries.

I don't think age should be the cutoff for retirement. Different players retire at a different age. Some players can still contribute to the team while in their 40s, while some find that they have to call it a day in their mid 30s. I think the cutoff point should be tsp or salary related. Maybe the season after players get skill drops, should their skills drop below the level of a 5* 18 year old rookie, there will be a notification on their page saying that they will retire after that season, and that retirement can be done in off-season. This should allow teams to make proper preparation (like acquiring replacements), and plus 3 new prospects from the draft should be sufficient enough to replace these players.
