Fresh off the impressive win against Australia last week, the England juniors faced another tough test as they faced another unbeaten team in 32nd ranked Latvia away.

England started strong going 5-0 up from 3 free throws from PF Andy King and a offisive rebound and putback from SG David Hughes. This proved to be the story of the first period as Latvia had some foul trouble as they committed 7 fouls in the period while England’s defence was efficient as they managed to not foul at all. Hughes’ rebounding was also a story as he had 7 rebounds in the quarter… from the SG spot! Despite the fouling, Latvia were able to stay close as the quarter ended with the score at 19-18 in England’s favour.

The second period saw both teams offensive flow pick up as both teams continued to battle for control of the game, but neither team could do so. England’s SF Sivaskaren Kanjilal had a horrible half as he shot 0-6FG but England’s ability to defend without fouling was enough to keep them ahead at half time as free throws by C Jamie Hermann put them up by 2 points. Hermann had an impressive first half with 10 points and 5 rebounds on 4-5 shooting.

Latvia tied the game to start the second half but England went on a 8-0 run from their in the first punch to land in the battle for control of the game. Baskets from Kong, Hughes and Hermann put England in a strong position it Latvia were again able to fight back and reduce the lead back to 4. A free throw from Hughes and a scrappy last minute meant that England held a 5 point lead heading in to the final period.

A quick basket from Kanjilal and free throws from PG Kevin Bunsell extended the lead to 9, but yet again Latvia were able to stay in the game by reducing the lead to 3. Another 8-0 run by England with around 5 minutes with baskets from Hermann, C Elvin Goodhew and SF David Miller put the lead up to a game high 12 points as victory looked in sight. Latvia battled hard to reduce the lead but couldn’t overturn the deficit. The final score was 89-83 as England moved to 6-0 and pretty much secured qualification for the knockout rounds.

England next face 49th ranked Croatia away in a game Croatia need to win to have any chance of reaching the knockout rounds.

Players of the game-
3 points- Jamie Hermann- a team high 19 points and 12 rebounds on 8-10 shooting for the Centre. He was also partially responsible for keeping the Latvia’s C to only 69.9 points per 100 shots, while England’s C had 126.3 points per 100 shots
2 points- David Hughes- 18 points and 8 rebounds for Hughes including some big baskets.
1 point- Andy King- 11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks for the ever reliable King.

I think any win at this stage is an achievement. We may have a chance against Serbia and Portugal if things go our way.

IN VYCKA WE TRUST!

Five interesting games indeed, I'm looking forward to seeing how we will fare.

It's been a good season so far for the junior team, but lots of work still to do to class it as a successful season.

Hi all,

I’m afraid to say that I don’t have time to do a full match report of the NT games this week. I have an exam coming up next week which alongside work is taking majority of my time this week. Here’s a brief summary.

Seniors
The seniors finished off their qualification campaign with a 95-80 win over 49th ranked Cyprus. SG Magdaleno Banuelos top scored with 26 points. The England seniors finished qualification with a 6-1 record which is good enough for them advance! They face a tough test in the next stage as they have drawn the group of Lithuania (host nation), Serbia, Portugal, Poland and Belgium. They face Serbia first on Monday.

Players of the game:
3 points- Magdaleno Banuelos- 26 points for Banuelos to lead the way, increasing his lead as the seasons top scorer.
2 points- Sean Hargreaves- 18 points and 8 rebounds for the SF
1 point- Ken Greene- 10 points, 7 assists and 3 steals on another efficient all round game for Greene.

Juniors
The juniors faced 49th ranked Croatia away in their last real test in the quest to go unbeaten. The juniors won convincingly 73-54 in a defensive masterclass, which included a 21-5 first quarter. The England juniors are now 7-0 on the season and face 78th ranked Pakistan in their final game as they look to go 8-0. The England juniors are now on a 14-1 run dating back to last season, with the only loss being an overtime loss to Portugal.

Players of the game-
3 points- David Hughes- Team high 15 points as well as 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a game high +25.
2 points- Jamie Hermann- Hermann passed the double-triple mark for the season with a 12 point, 14 rebound effort putting his season totals to 103 points and 101 rebounds.
1 point- Sivaskaren Kanjilal- 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and a +23 in a solid supporting effort.

Sorry, another mad week for me!

Seniors
PF Ken Greene was the sole bright point for the England seniors as they lost their first 2nd round game 103-89 against 34th ranked Serbia. Most of the damage was done in the first half as Serbia led by 17 points at half time. England did manage to win the 2nd half by 3 points but it wasn't enough to worry Serbia. England next face 22nd ranked Portugal who also lost their first 2nd round game.

Players of the game:
3 points- Ken Greene- 24 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals on 12-20 shooting to lead the way for England
2 points- Dexter Barral- A decent balanced performance of 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for Big Barral
1 point- Ian Needham- 12 points on 5-8 shooting for Needham earns him 1 point.

Juniors
The Juniors beat 78th ranked Pakistan 114-48 in their final qualifying game to finish unbeaten at 8-0. England dominated from the tip and never looked back as they overpowered the weaker Pakistan in every factor of the game. This is demonstrated by 71 team rebounds (+36) and 24 team assists (+7 more than basket scored by Pakistan). All 4 bigs recorded double figure rebounds with Hermann and Padilla finishing with double-doubles. England finished the qualifying campaign 8th in the standings, which draws us against 59th ranked Sweden in the first knock-out round.

Players of the game:
3 points- Kevin bunsell- 23 points (game high) in 25 minutes for the PG who also held the opposing PG to 1-16 shooting. Bunsell also had a game high +46.
2 points- Sivasekaren Kanjilal- 13 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists on 5-8 shooting for SK in a solid all-round performance.
1 point- Francis Padilla- 12 points and 11 rebound double-double off the bench
