U21 Press Release
Pilipinas beats France, 98-89
Team Pilipinas pulled a major upset against heavily favored France, beating Les Bleus 98-89 at the BKO Arena Monday night.
Coach Jeorge talked to his stalwarts during the break - the French controlled the game at this point, leading by 14 points, 45-31. A team source was able to provide a recording of what was discussed - “We are not expected to do well in this tournament, so I will give you a choice. Either we allow the other teams to control the game and focus on planning for next season, or give it everything you’ve got and bring the fight to them. This will be your legacy to the U21 National team, gentlemen”. The team came back in the second half and outscored France, 67-44.
Erald Ruz played the game of his life, scoring a career high 32 points. He also finished the game with 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 1 block. “I am so happy we got the much-needed win against France. I am at a loss for words… All I can say is, I will continue to give my 110% whenever I get the chance to play” Ruz said during the post-game conference. Ruz never scored more than 29 points as a member of the Mabalacat Tribes.
French guard Antoine Mazurier led Les Bleus with 23 points, playing an efficient 58% clip from the field. Valentin Fleury, their star Center, did not suit up for the game because of an injury. The French loss now puts them in an interesting situation: They have to win against Romania next week, or else face getting eliminated in the tournament. Fleury is expected to recover in two weeks, so he will also not suit up for that game.
Team Pilipinas hopes to win their next game against Germany, and earn a spot in the next round.
