well this is what i would do if i was starting fresh.

carry 10 minimal salary players, pick either my position i want to build my team around
find myself 2 18 y/o trainees that fit well but are cheap Perennial Allstar Potential.
one position train these players based off what position they are.
care nothing about winning and just train train train and dump all your excess cash into your arena.
once you reach 10000 1000 500 10 in arena seats start looking to add players into the mix to help you win.
You will draft before that point, hope for a good player int he draft to help ya.
my roommate employed this strategy when i got him to pick up the game a year ago, he now has a u21 player and has beaten me to DIV 3.

draftees will become available after the allstar game, i would only invest in 2 per week and save them till the end of the season and only do the scouting combine this season, sorting the players by ages then by position selection, if you want bigs put the bigs up to or guards small guys up top etc etc. save the rest of your points.
it wont take as long as you think to build your arena up if you just keep at it, if you stray away from building and waste money on useless players then it will take a long time.

after the this season and next season you should be at the mark, and if you save all but 10 draft points from this season plus draft points from next season you should have around 40-50 points, then you can do some serious scouting and find yourself a trainee or two to either pair with the guys you trained over this and next season or to replace them. then you start adding players, and your golden

Yeah, game one was a real close affair for the most part as well.
Stone played horribly in GM1, But we managed to squeak it out and i chalked it up to your big guys and the fact you had me pegged on tactic and i figured Dietrich must have better D so figuring you were gonna peg me with the same tactic as i haven't changed it all season i threw a wrench in there and went with Base, and stuck Stone at C hoping to coax some more points out of him, i did get some points but Hong didnt play very well but oh well we pulled out the win and i reward my players with Listings on the market:)
Best of luck! maybe we end up in the same III?
