I have seen Chinese last names on American flagged players. A few times, I see a name I'd call American under a foreign flag. Since each nation has a seperate database, I guess BB cares something about seperate nationalities. Maybe this reflects foreign players imported into other nations, such as Yao Ming to the NBA, American players to Philippines and Europe, and European players also to the NBA.

Try Korea, Hong Kong, or Taiwan. Many Asian countries use that name.

Not exactly: Yao Ming was, is and will be a Chinese citizen no matter where he plays...

BB tries to to take into account the actual population variety of each country. And allthough the Dutch names database consists for 100% out of typical Dutch names, the names list that is actually used when generating players isn't: There are a lot of Dutch citizens whose parents and/or grandparents were form Al Magrib, Turkey, Indonesia, China and many other countries, so they might have very "exotic" names. This is shown by using a small % of those countries names databases for the "Dutch" names list.

Can you actually search names by country? It looks like you have to type in a first name as well as last name.

Yes, you must search a first and last name. One cannot search simply for Winthrop. The transfer list allows you to search by nation, but I'm not sure if that fits exactly what you want.

The Americans who play in Philippines aren't Philippines citizens, but I expect they have a very good visa, the kind I want. Same for Yao Ming , but I don't need to discuss his status. A majority of my peers would try to give him American citizenship even if he refused it.

Well, I am not arguing that, but I haven't found a player with a last name of Chiu from China. That's all.

Some nations have a high ratio of multicultural names and others are homogenous for their native names. I wonder what data BB uses to create their name databases?
