Season 61 U21 World Championships schedule released

The Pilipinas Cubs will face an uphill battle in this cycle of the U21 World Championships tournament.

The U21 squad will join a stacked Pool A which includes the top two seeds (USA and Spain) and two other squads that are ranked in the top 10 - Israel (6th) and Serbia (8th). While some pundits believe the Cubs are in this for the 'learning experience', coach Morwood seems to think otherwise. "The road to being the world champion is never easy, and this schedule proves if you want to be the best, you have to play against the best," Morwood said in a phone interview last night.

It is unclear whom Coach Morwood will call up as part of the squad. The team is schedule to fly in to Sofia by Thursday, May 25.

Cubs defeat Serbia, 93-87

Coach Morwood used both his mastery of game tactics and a 16-point lead entering the fourth quarter to beat 8th ranked Serbia in downtown Sofia, Bulgaria last May 30.

A late surge by the Máté Bocsa - led Serbians was enough to beat Team Pilipinas, who despite the win, are fourth in Pool A because of an inferior point different against the US, Spain, and Brazil.

Starting the tournament with a win is really good, this is the kind of momentum we need in preparation for our next game against the (top ranked) United States

, coach Morwood said in a phone interview.

You know you have a good chance of winning if their top scorer plays off the bench. This, however, tells you how deep their squad is. I am happy to get the win.

Small forward sensation Mike Delabajan led the Panthers with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals with 0 turnovers in 34 minutes of action.

The Panthers are expected to have a touch matchup against the 1st seed United States, who soundly defeated Egypt earlier that day, 110-81.
