As long as the game at least breaks even, it makes sense to keep the servers running with minimal maintenance. But if the active user base drops to the point where operating costs consistently exceed revenue, shutting the servers down would be around the corner

May be in the future I will be an offer for this game.
As a dev, and as a atrocious basketball's player, I cannot see this game go to die.

I love BB

Count me in! DS and AI Engineer here.

Not an expert in game ops, but a possible long-term alternative could be a community buyout and ownership if the game ever stops being commercially viable. That wouldn’t necessarily mean fully open-sourcing the game mechanics, but the infrastructure and platform could be community-maintained while the core game logic remains controlled or treated as a black box by a small trusted admin group.

Just about keeping the game alive in a sustainable way for the community that still cares about it!

I completely disagree with you , my old adversary and BB friend.

if I ask them what they are doing, it's not because i want to be annoying. I love the game and want to see it succeed and grow. call me selfish if you want, but it's in their interest as well..

now of course, they don't owe me or anybody here anything. they bought this, they can do whatever they want with it.

however, this company launched a very nice succesful app, I think they know how to do build a product, they've shown it.
so to me it's crazy to think that they take this approach of not using the community to validate ideas and game design and architectural decisions.
I think it's more probable that BB is not a business priority. and in that case, I disagree with you, BB is not necessarly going to live that long as time goes by and the user base shrinks. you don't really have a strong business case if you are left with 2000 users on the server.

so yeah, long story short, I believe that it is the sign of a good, healthy community one that asks for some sort of updates / commitments from the owners. and I think it's bad for the business to ignore that.

c'mon, it's not like anybody here asked specifics or timelines .. but .. something :) ..

saying that you are still 'working on it, thinking on it' its not enough. no commitment is being shown.

The only thing we can do now is to hope and wait, they said things are ongoing, while it's taking a while atleast we keep enjoying the same game we always loved, without any drastic changes yet.

The fact that BB is still alive is thanks to it's players, and the only way to keep it going is to keep supporting the game by playing and especially by being a supporter or having an utopia team so they can cover the server costs.

The rest, if it comes will be a good surprise for us

While it does not come, let's keep enjoying the game we've always enjoyed for these almost 20 years of existence

We have a saying back home: "It's better to be an accomplice to your silence than a slave to your words."

If the new owner had stuck to announcing the purchase of the game without raising expectations for news and deep changes, part of the community wouldn't be demanding those updates now.

Unless I am mistaken, the last update in the platform from the owners was on 12/27/2024 (...)

"Welcome to season 67! We are entering the New Year soon with the total reconstruction of BuzzerBeater still in the works. We will be releasing any further information about this grand project as we are able to."

And that came from BB-Marin, not from the new main ownership. I doubt that the game would still be playable if it was not for BB-Marin and BB-Justin, so we should all thank them. And of course there is a certain level of appreciation we should have for the new management since they haven't shut down the servers.

While the absence of updates is borderline laughable, the overall situation is pretty clear: They bought the game with grandiose plans, but they quickly realized that the existing codebase is not very similar to the Unity demo mobile games or Spotify clones that they keep publishing on the app store. If they were meaningfully closer to modernize the backend of the game, surely there would be hearing official updates. They have no interest in the current state of the game; if they did, surely they would first try to do incremental improvements, first in the UI and then in the backend. They could make all the new features opt-in with a long transition period so that everyone that believes that the current UI is god-given wouldn't be affected at first, yet there would be meaningful user-facing progress from day one. If those changes led to significant user growth, then "the total reconstruction of BuzzerBeater" from the ground-up would be a sensible next step.

It would be very interesting to learn the story behind the "leaked" new UI that was posted on youtube. Based on the latest message on Discord, it seems like it was completely abandoned. It would be mind-boggling if they think that the current user base would be interested in a UI with those characteristics.

Anyway... The phrase "[...] we will start also building the new UI around BuzzerBeater. We are evaluating what technologies are better because plain html + CSS for certain features is not enough so we are exploring other possible technologies like Rive (!) [...]" says everything one needs to know about the current situation.
