Chunks reach the League Finals

The New York Chunks have reached the finals with two emotional wins, and look to build on their momentum. In the opening round, the Chunks hosted their rivals, the Warcats. A strong first quarter put the Chunks in command and they never lost the lead, winning 90-71. The Warcats’ center, Leornard Denny, played strong, putting up 33 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, but the Warcats weak backcourt play and poor perimeter shooting proved their downfall. The Chunks’ Dan Donald also scored 33 points, but the team’s rebounding edge and better free throw shooting were key to the victory. Three different Chunks had double-digit rebounding numbers, including Luca Cassia and Delfino Garrido’s double-doubles.

The Chunk’s following game against the division leader Chi Chi Bandits saw the Chunks in a strong underdog role, on the road against a team with a dominant front court. After a tight first quarter, the Chunks built a solid lead midway through the second, outscoring the Bandits 21-10. The Chunks defense was effective at limiting the Bandits big men and at forcing their guards to win it from the outside. In the end, the well-balanced Chunks proved too much for the Bandits. Four players for the Chunks scored in double-digits, lead by Garrido’s second double-double in the playoffs with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Eric Paz also had a double-double with his 13 points and 12 boards. The Chunks out-rebounded the Bandits by an impressive 53-38 margin, pulling out the 80-71 win.

The Chunk will now face Bears73, who will be the strong favorite to win the championship. Bears73 has had the league’s best record from start to finish. The Bears sport a strong front-court tandem and a very strong point guard rotation, showing few weaknesses all season. In their only meeting of the season, the Chunks managed a close win at home against a sluggish Bears73 team. This time around, however, Bears73 will certainly bring their A game, and they will certainly be very tough to beat.
