Chuks Lose First Game to Bears73

The New York Chunks lost a heartbreaker to Bears73 in the opener of the championship round. Bears73 came out firing, but the Chinks finished the first quarter strong building a nine-point lead as some Bears73 players found themselves in early foul trouble. But Bears73 came back in the second quarter, and only one point separated the teams at halftime. The Chunks again came out strongly, but they couldn’t put the game away as Bears73 fought their way into the lead half way through the final quarter and put the Chunks away, 91-85.

The Chunks were lead by Eric Paz, who put up 31 points and 12 rebounds. There were strong performances from Dan Donald with 24 points, and Delfino Garrido who had 11 points and 11 boards. Jimmie Alonzo pulled down an impressive 10 rebounds off the bench. But the story of the game was the interior defense of Bears73, keeping the Chunks post game quiet, and their success on the offense boards with an astounding 21 offense rebounds.

Unfortunate for the Chunks was an injury to rookie point guard Russell Harder in the fourth quarter. Veteran all-star Eric Fernandez will take the starting role back for the next game, but with less depth in the backcourt, the Chunks will need to make another effort at scoring on the inside and hope for better success at home. The chunks will also need to be better prepared to guard Bears73’s outside game, where they took 30 3-point shots in their win, hitting a third of them.

The Rat Hole will be rocking for the Chunk’s do-or-die game on Saturday night. Even with the tough loss, the Chunks are optimistic after a game on the road against a team that had a perfect game plan, knowing how even under these circumstances they were close to pulling off an upset.
