The New York Chunks, appearing in the Finals in their first season back in D.III, were thoroughly swept by the Jack Rabbits and denied a swift return to D.II. After a season of mostly ups but enough downs to derail an hoped-for quick turn around season, the Chunks finished as Great 8 conference champions at 18-4, good enough for 1st place, with a pair of playoff wins before hitting a wall in the Finals.
USA D.III-1 proved to be much more competitive than the Chunks saw in their previous D.III stint. In fact, the other top teams in the division were on par with many of the teams the Chunks faced the precious five season in USA D.II-1. Nevertheless, the team managed to finish with a league-best average point differential of 29.5 points per game, by far the widest margin. However, both top teams in the Big 8 still finished with better records.
Though finishing as runner-up was certainly a disappointing end to the season, the were a few highlights with regard to the Chunks’ personnel. The determined development of the future face of the team in Donnie Rivas was able to continue at a rapid pace. Rivas will likely see a dramatic increase in playing time outside of scrimmages in the next season. Gabriel Cordona also continued to improve his game and is a pivotal force on the roster. But the late-season acquisition of Alhierd Radzinski may well prove to the be the difference-maker in the future, bringing strength and youth to the roster.
The Chunks will look for another strong showing in Season 17, and hopefully this time around they will not be denied a championship.
