Chunks Get First Win

On the road in a nationally televised against rival Phi Slamma Jamma, the reeling New York Chunks were desperate for their first victory and got one. Perhaps no win was bigger for this team since joining the league as the new-look Chunks’ season was on the brink of despair heading into the much anticipated and critical game. As the Chunks are in the midst of major roster reconstruction project to inject new life and in a new direction for the stalling franchise, a win like this likely meant the difference between throwing in the towel and regrouping for a renewed effort at a run for the elusive playoffs. The team is hoping that the big win will create momentum and lead to a season turn around.

The Chunks’ only addition to the team has freshly acquired center Garbriel Cordona. However, in the past few weeks the Chunks have seen departures that include of Hall of Famer Eric Paz, last season’s leading rebounder Davide Mandiroli, pure shooter Tomer Levin, and developing small forward Kirk Guthrie. Additionally, the highest paid player on the roster before the arrival of Cordona, Ugo Severin, is expected to be transferred later today. And all of this is happening only six weeks after transferring Hall of Fame forward Delfino Garrido. Thanks to the development of several players over the last few seasons, the Chunks’ management felt it was time to sacrifice depth for star power. As a result of the all the recent activity, the Chunks have actually taken in much more money than was spent on Cordona, and the total roster payroll is smaller. There is much speculation about what the Chunks may do next with rumors pointing to several of the Chunks’ players as candidates for the transfer list, and of course with the new infusion of cash and a lower payroll, the Chunks may attempt another splash by signing another player or two. Or perhaps the Chunks will let the season play out the next few weeks before deciding on any further roster alterations. The only certainty is the team’s willingness to shake things up in what has been a period of change that will have lasting effects on the franchise.
