Back to Conference Play

Jose Nickerson: His teammates affectionately call him the "Old Man." His best playing days are probably behind him, but the Dog River fans love the unanimous Season 4 league MVP. Last night the Riverdogs trailed LONG FINGER 35-18 at the end of the first quarter. Only Ernie "Lights Out" Blanton was scoring—but more about him later. The nearly full-capacity crowd of 11800 seemed to be sitting on their hands. Gianvito Cucija had the flu, didn't start and had 3 early fouls after subbing for the starter Marc Curtichs. Then Curtichs picked up his third foul too. At the 5:32 left in the 2nd quarter, with the Dogs trailing 41-29, Jose Nickerson entered the game. When he exited the game to a standing ovation—at the 8:43 mark of the 3rd quarter—the score was tied 57-57 and his line showed: 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 thundering blocks. From that point on, Blanton and "Mad Dog" Frame took over on offense and the Dogs outscored their opponent 56-44 the rest of the way for a hard-fought 113-101 win.
Back to Blanton: Ernie lived up to his nickname with a career-high 49 points on 19-33 shooting and 6-11 on 3FG. Frame chipped in with 7-16 shooting (3-5 3FG), good for 24 points. Ernie had 5 assists with 0 TOs and Frame had 4 assists with no TOs. Danny Justice led the team with 15 rebounds while Freddy "The Hammer" Davila had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Riverdogs moved their record to 13-3, one game behind the conference-leading New Haven Chargers and 2 games ahead of the Raleigh Roughriders. Next up for the Dogs is Tuesday's away game with the always dangerous Killer Bruises led by All Star Steven Spencer.
