After a long road trip—3 games and a total of 3 overtimes—the weary Riverdogs returned to Dog River yesterday afternoon after an incredible week. Let's summarize:
Tuesday: The Riverdogs traveled to the Imperial Phantoms to play one of the league's best defensive teams. Despite trailing most of the game, the Dogs battled back from an 8-point 4th-quarter deficit to tie the game in regulation on Freddy "The Hammer" Davila's backdoor slam dunk as time expired. After each team scored 6 points in the first OT, the Riverdogs' supersub Siegwart "Sieg" Schoefboeck took over in the 2nd OT, scoring 4 points and propelling the Riverdogs to an 84-76 win. Michaelangelo "Fuse" Fuso led the Dogs with 21 points, while Edward "E-Will" Williams, playing all 58 minutes, set a Dog River record with 31 rebounds.
Thursday: In a US Cup road game that really wasn't as close as the score might indicate. the Riverdogs defeated the Div II.1 ATL the Hawks 92-71 behind a balanced outside attack: Etienne "ET" Loubier led with 20 points, Zika "Z" Ilicevic had 19, Schoefboeck (off the bench) had 19 also, while Fuso added 16. Victor "Lucas" Lucena added 12 rebounds to his scoring total of 10.
Saturday: In another overtime game, the Riverdogs once again rallied in the fourth quarter. The deficit—14 points—was one of the largest that the team had ever overcome in a win. Their opponent, the rebuilding Grim Koalas—the US Cup runnerup last season—played extremely well and looks like their retooling is nearly complete. Down by 14 points with 6 minutes to go, the Riverdogs still trailed by 8 points with less than 2 minutes on the clock. But Fuso, held to 0-12 in 3FG shooting for nearly the entire game, kept firing and made his last 3 three-point attempts to lead the rally. Then in the overtime, the Dogs turned once again to supersub Schoefboeck who scored all 6 of his points in the extra period to lead the Dogs to the win.
Sunday: Owner Pappy O'Daniel was informed that 20 year old C Izidor Radoš has been selected to play on the Slovenia U-21 team. While the Riverdogs have had players on U-21 NTs before, this is the first time that a roster player was ever selected to a NT. Pappy pointed out that present SG Loubier played for the Canadian junior NT while former Riverdog C Etias Scalise played for the Argentinian U-21 team, but both these players were already on those teams when acquired by Dog River.
Monday: In league statistics released today, the Riverdogs are #1 in fewest points allowed, #1 in rebounding, #3 in blocks and # 4 in assists.
