Mid-Season Moves

In what team officials called a regretful move, owner Pappy O'Daniel announced early Sunday morning the firing of longtime coach Joe Macauley and the subsequent hiring of former Riverdog Jose Nickerson to replace him. Macauley, son of former NBA star and HOF member "Easy Ed" Macauley, had been the sole Riverdogs coach since the Dog River jfranchise joined BB late in season 3. "These two last-second losses this week to teams we should have beaten was the last straw. We appreciate Joe's contributions to the Riverdogs' organization but overall we felt that we had to move in a different direction," Pappy added.

The hiring of Nickerson comes at a pivotal point of the Riverdogs' season. In fourth place with a disappointing 7-6 record, but still alive in the National tournament—the Dogs' Cup run seems to be coming to an end with their 6th road game in 7 games, this time against the NBBA Chicago Bulls, ranked #3 in the USA and #18 in the world—the Riverdogs will aim to earn their 10th consecutive playoff berth.

Dog River will host this year's All-Star game and 3-point competition. As is often the case, the well-balanced Riverdogs receive little mention at All-Star time although their 6-10 C Etias "Big E" Scalise was selected as the backup. Pappy noted that the newly expanded Dog Kennel might possibly be ready for a crowd in excess of 18,000.

The selection on Riverdog fan favorite Jose Nickerson did not totally surprise many longtime supporters. The 6-11 former league MVP (unanimous selection in season 4) retired after season 11 but had been working in the Riverdog front office. A good rebounder and great scorer, the "Old Man" was known for his tireless physical play—and for his leadership. When reached this morning at the "Ruby Cafe," his favorite haunt, Nickerson promised that the Riverdogs "are going to attack more offensively and not totally rely on our great defensive abilities. I think that the fans will enjoy an increased offensive tempo."

Great to see Jose Nickerson back with the team in a big role. He has always been a big part of the organization and I am sure he be very successful.

I just heard on ESPN that they are praising this move! I guess as much as they love Joe Macauley as a person, and think he still has coaching left him, its best for the Riverdog's to add some fresh direction for a spark.

No doubt the future looks bright for the Riverdog fans. I am sure Nickersons energy and ability to draw up plays will help in those close end game situations!

Good move Riverdogs!
