New Season

Former Little All-America Ray Chad (U of Wisconsin-Eau Claire) and wily veteran Jose Nickerson (Louisiana-Monroe) return to lead the Dog River Riverdogs in their first full season in the Division IV-4. In last year's abbreviated season, the 'Dogs finished 4th and qualified for the playoffs. But now they're looking for marked improvement as they open up their newly refurbished fieldhouse, the Dog Kennel. New seats have been added, an organist has been hired to rev up the crowd, and the visitor's locker room has been given a fresh coat of pink paint. Several rookies, including Louisiana high school player of the year Danny Justice (New Orlean's St. Ignatius) will get a chance to make an impact and push the veterans for playing time. The 'Dogs return leading scorer Walter "The Stick" Amaya (18.8 ppg), Anthony Hough (14.4 ppg), Chad (17.9 ppg and 11.9 rpg) and Nickerson (15.9 ppg in 21 minutes per game). Head coach Joe McCauley, grandson of NBA great "Easy Ed" McCauley, has emphasized defense in the off-season but has also promised a redesigned offense to bring out the Riverdogs potential. Owner Pappy ODaniel—and his adorable wife Connie— look forward to greeting all the Dog River fans at every game.
