Coming off an impressive 111-87 win last night against W&C BBall Club, the Dog River Riverdogs head into tomorrow's 5th-round national tournament game well motivated to progress in the Cup. In a game that really wasn't as close as the score might indicate, the Dogs rode the 14-19 FG (and 3-5 3FG) shooting of Michaelangelo "The Fuse" Fuso—38 points—and "ET" Loubier's 4-11 3FG for 16 points to the win. Freddy "The Hammer" Davila had 14 points on 7-8 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds. With the score 90-53 after 3 quarters, Coach Jose Nickerson literally called off the Dogs in the fourth. With a 7-3 record, the 3rd-placDogs head into Saturday's road game against Big 8's #1 Knickertarderer
Owner Pappy O'Daniel wanted to point out in this press release the key fellow managers and owners who have contributed to whatever success the Riverdogs have achieved, including the nearly unique achievement of 11 straight playoff berths. Now to those contributors:
The Meridian Hill McMornings: This list would have to start here as Pappy's son is the manager of this USA NBBA team. Abel was instrumental in encouraging Pappy ("Pops" to him) to buy the dilapidated fieldhouse in Dog River and starting the then-Div IV ballclub. Abel serves as a sounding board for nearly all facets of BB. His mantra: "You can never have too much defense, rebounding or passing."
The Basket Brawlers: Manager High Tide should be called the cheerleader! He always helps Pappy look at the bright side of things, even after a devastating loss. Even when the Brawlers moved from beautiful Morro Bay (California) to the high desert of Arizona, High Tide didn't miss a beat with his ideas and encouragement.
The DC Dribble Penetrators of pternes have often been PL competitors of the Riverdogs. The Penetrators are now in the Dogs' conference after several years in the NBBA. Pternes has often given solid training and tactic ideas. Few teams can board with his normal league-leading rebounders.
OYOH: BB-Jason, a relative newcomer to BB, has often helped with encouragement and roster advice. His IV team has improved dramatically in a very short time and is presently in a conference dogfight in one of the toughest IV leagues in the US.
Da Dawgs: Coach Dawg, with his computer knowledge, has helped analyze the Riverdog roster and given solid training ideas too. Now if Pappy weren't so computer illiterate:-)...Matt's Dawgs are a solid IV team and we'll look for them to promote very soon.
The Paper Pushers: A former Canadian NT manager, HeadPaperPusher ("Pusher") is a frequent contributor to the two federations to which the Riverdogs belong: "Audacity of Hoop" and "Teams on the Rise." "Pusher" has often helped the Riverdogs with training and roster ideas. He is one of the best SF trainers in the BB world.
astral weeks: Manager Astral Weeks, who has an enviable real life position with an actual NBA team, has helped the Dogs with encouragement and lineup ideas. AW promoted to II very quickly and is presently regrouping his team after relegating to III. Pappy believes that Matt's small retooling will have astral weeks back in II soon.
The Park Slope Prospectors; Like pternes and abel, jakecw's team is based in Washington, DC. Active since sometime during season 2, jakecw was especially important in the "early" days with ideas and encouragement. A solid III division team, the Prospectors have been in II before and are making a solid effort to promote this season.
Other teams that have helped—or are presently helping—contribute to the Dog River organization are the Salisbury Auerbachs, the Blue Stars, and Phoenix Blue Suns. Teams who help promote the Riverdogs include Skookum Jim's Fighting Halibut, the Codester's Thunderclan Warriors and our sister Australian team, Tremell's Chumunga.
